dpkg -i gfax_0.7.6-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
You may have to log out, then log back in for the Gfax menu item to appear.
Open Gfax from the Applications->Office menu and do some basic configuration:

OpenOffice
To fax from OpenOffice, you must make a printer with ooadmin or spadmin and use 'gfaxlpr' as the command. Do not choose fax device. You will then have a printer in OpenOffice.
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin
When you use it, OOo will prompt you for a phone number, you can safely just hit 'ok' without entering anything. Once you do this, Gfax will popup and work.
