E-mail Print PDF

Ubuntu Gutsy

sudo apt-get install gfax

Ubuntu Edgy

As of this writing, only version 0.7.3 is in the repositories.  It is best to download and install the latest version from the Gfax web site.

wget http://gfax.cowlug.org/gfax_0.7.6-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

dpkg -i gfax_0.7.6-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

You may have to log out, then log back in for the Gfax menu item to appear.

Open Gfax from the Applications->Office menu and do some basic configuration:

  • Edit->Preferences
    • System
      • Transport: Hylafax
        • you will have to restart Gfax after changing this
      • Phone Inf: <your fax number>
    • Hylafax
      • Hostname: <your hylafax server name or IP>
      • Username: <your hylafax username
        • see /etc/hylafax/etc/hosts.hfaxd
        • see also faxadduser command
    • User
      • E-Mail Address: <your e-mail address>
      • Send Immediately
      • Use Fine Resolution

You can then print to a fax frinter from Gnome applications.

OpenOffice

To fax from OpenOffice, you must make a printer with ooadmin or spadmin and use 'gfaxlpr' as the command.  Do not choose fax device.  You will then have a printer in OpenOffice.

/usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin
When you use it, OOo will prompt you for a phone number, you can safely just hit 'ok' without entering anything. Once you do this, Gfax will popup and work.
