Share Your Printer Using Windows XP

E-mail Print PDF

This page shows you how to share a printer from a Windows XP computer so that other computers can print to it over a local area network (wired or wireless).

Share the Printer

To share the printer, open the Printers and Faxes folder on the computer that has the printer connected.

To open the Printers and Faxes folder, Click Start and then click Control Panel.

  • Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  • In the Printers and Faxes folder, click the printer's icon to select it
  • In the tasks pane, click Share This Printer.
    • Use a short, logical name with no spaces for the 'share'.
    • You'll see the printer icon change to one with a 'hand' indicating it is shared.
  • Opened the printer's Properties dialog box.
  • Click on the Sharing tab.
  • Click Share Name, and then click OK.

The printer will immediately be available for other computers to use.

Using the Shared Printer

To connect to the printer from a networked computer:

  • Opened Control Panel.
  • Click Printers and Other Hardware.
  • Click Add a Printer.
  • Click Network Printer.
  • Browse for the shared printer you want to configure.
On some shared printers, particularly those that are not shared from a Windows PC, you will have to browse to the appropriate printer driver.  However, if you are sharing the printer from a Windows PC, the driver will most likely install automatically.
