E-mail Print PDF

Remote Desktop is a form of remote control that is included with Windows XP and newer MS Windows versions.  You can use any version of Windows, and many other operating systems to remotely control the  Remote Desktop host.

Enable Remote Desktop on the PC to Be Controlled (Host)

First, we must configured the host PC to accept Remote Desktop connections.

  • right-click My Computer and choose Properties
  • click the Remote tab
  • under Remote Desktop, enable Allow Users to Connect...
  • Select Remote Users to be allowed access
    • users with admin permissions are automatically allowed...you don't have to select them

When someone remotely controls the PC, the local user will be unable to use it.

Remote (Controlling) PC

On the remote end, you need to use a Remote Desktop Client program.  Windows XP already has this built in.  Just go to:

Start - All Programs - Accessories - Communications - Remote Desktop

On older versions of Windows, you have to download and install the Remote Desktop Client program first. Make sure to do that as a user with admin privileges. Here is a link to download:

To connect from the remote PC,  just log in as you normally would and run
the Remote Desktop Client. Point it to the IP address or resolvable (NETBIOS or DNS) name of the host PC and log in to the PC as you would if you were sitting in front of it.

Troubleshooting

If the host PC is inside a firewall or NAT, you must allow or forward port 3389 to the host PC.
