Speeding Up Slow Windows Login and Logoff Times

E-mail Print PDF

Remember when your network and PC were new?  Logging on and off took only seconds...

As time goes on, logon and logoff times often increase annoyingly,  This is primarily due to the increasing size of your Windows profile.   Windows stores per-user data in a user 'profile'.  This profile is essentially a directory here:

c:\documents and settings\<profilename>

You can see how large your profile is by right-clicking on your profile folder and selecting properties.

When you log into or out of a domain, your profile gets synchronized with the server.  This is what causes the delay.  This is called a roaming profile.  Roaming profiles have many advantages...and a few disadvantages.

You can control the amount of data stored in your profile.  Here are a few suggestions that will shrink your profile and speed up your network logins and logouts.

  • frequently empty your web browser cache
    • Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Files in Internet Explorer
    • Tools -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Cache -> Clear in Firefox for Windows
  • don't store files or documents in My Documents
    • My Documents is in your profile
    • store files in your home directory instead (H:)
      • storing documents in your home directory has other advantages
        • gets backed up on tape every night
        • accessible from any workstation you log into
  • don't store documents or files on your Desktop
    • your Desktop is in your profile
    • store files in your home directory instead (H:)
