Domain Administrators with SME 7

E-mail Print PDF

Sometimes poorly written (Windows) software will require certain admin privileges when it shouldn't. Personally, I recommend boycotting those products, but sometimes you just can't avoid them.

This is not a recommended procedure, it's a security risk!  This is just something to get you by in an emergency.  Be sure to remind (frequently) any users given administrative privileges of the fragility of Windows and lack of security and to be careful!

Sometimes, you can limit your security risk to a single workstation by just adding the domain user to the local PC user database and assigning Power User or Administrator privileges to the local user.  This way, your network is at less risk.

In this list:

  • Peachtree Accounting
  • Quickbooks Accounting
  • everything else from Intuit

With SME 7, you can deal with this easily:

  • in the Server-Manager, create a group such as 'admins'
  • put "Domain Admins" in the group description/Windows name field
  • this will assign this group as Windows Domain Administrators

If you run into any programs that need this hack, please e-mail us with the details and we'll add them to this list.
