Spam Filter Info for SME 7

E-mail Print PDF

Introduction to Antispam Practices

Go here...after reading this page.

This Applies to... (Probably) You!

This information pertains to our public SonoraMail mail server as well as to SME 7 servers, which most of our clients have installed in their offices and use as their regular mail servers.  All use the same SpamAssassin spam filter software.

False-Positives

With the settings we usually use for the SpamAssassin spam filter commonly installed on SME 7 servers, there are very few false-positives.  In other words, valid messages will rarely, if ever, be filtered out as spam.

The 'spamiest' messages are blocked at a very low level and wil not even appear in your quarantine area...the 'junkmail' folder.

Messages judged as spam, but not too 'spammy', are placed in your quarantine folder.  You can peruse this folder whenever you want to check for falsely-filtered messages.  Most folks have never checked their quarantine...

White and Black Lists

There is a Whitelist and a Blacklist, though these lists are not maintained automatically.  If you are having problems with spam from a particular spammer or if you have valid mail that is continually filtered, see your system administrator.

The Quarantine

Quarantined messages are automatically deleted after a preconfigured amount of time...typically 15 days.  This cam be adjusted on a system-wide basis.

Your quarantine, the 'junkmail' folder, is exposed to you as a regular IMAP message folder.  For those of you using standard IMAP mail clients, you will automatically see (or can subscribe to) this folder.

For the majority of you not using an IMAP mail client, the easiest way to peruse your quarantine is to use webmail.  Webmail is just another IMAP mail client to your mail server.

If you want to access the webmail on your local server, use this URL in any web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox:

https://yourservername/webmail

Be sure to substitute your actual server name.  Use your regular network username and password...the ones you use every day to login.

If you have a mailbox on mail.sonoracomm.com, use this URL:

https://webmail.sonoracomm.com

Use your regular credentials to log in...the same ones that you use in your regular mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.)

Once you've logged in, just browse to the 'junkmail' folder on the left-hand side to see the filtered mail.
